10 Helpful Hints for Successful Remodeling

Hint 1: Always ask to see the remodeler's proof of insurance and worker's compensation. This will ensure a professional approach to the business and compliance with local regulations.

Hint 2: Don't sign a contract until all the details are clear and complete. If it isn't in the contract, legally it doesn't exist.

Hint 3: Never get your own permit for the work. Most local jurisdictions consider the person who obtained the permit to be liable. Let your contractor take that risk. It is part of what you are paying for when you hire him or her.

Hint 4: Never sign for deliveries. You will be held responsible if the shipment is damaged, incomplete or incorrect. Again, allow your contractor to take that risk.

Hint 5: Remember that the interest on most home equity loans is tax deductible. This makes financing a better choice than cash in most cases. Be sure to check with your financial advisor for the best course of action.

Hint 6: Always follow up on references. Ask questions. Ask to see the work. Ask if the reference would hire the contractor again without hesitation.

Hint 7: Keep your receipts from the project. Investments in your home can be deducted against your capital gains taxes when you sell.

Hint 8: Sit down with your remodeler before a project begins to lay the ground rules. If you don't want loud music played or smoking on your property, speak up before the first hammer is raised. It prevents problems in the long run.

Hint 9: Do a little research. There are so many products available in the market today that you may need to do a little legwork before knowing exactly what you want. It pays to check out the new options before you make your choices. Your remodeler will be able to guide you to local supply houses in your area.

Hint 10: Talk to your contractor. This is the only way to ensure a successful project. You are a team. Be sure the lines of communication are open at all times. If you have a problem, alert your contractor immediately.
